Plot
During the flashback-happy 1940s, screenwriters knocked themselves out trying to find new and creative methods of allowing the protagonist to recall the past events which led up to the movie's current situation. In Dead Reckoning, Rip Murdock ( Humphrey Bogart ) recites the film's plotline to a priest in the Confessional. Murdock and Johnny Drake ( William Prince ) are Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, en route to Washington by train. Drake hops off and disappears, leading Murdock on a hectic manhunt. Upon meeting Drake's former girlfriend Coral Chandler ( Lizabeth Scott ), Murdock is thrown into a maelstrom of intrigue involving a crooked gambler ( Morris Carnovsky ) and a complex blackmailing scheme. The upshot of this is that Murdock finds himself the prime suspect in a murder. The genuine culprit is revealed shortly before a spectacular car-crash finale. The producers of Dead Reckoning obviously hoped to rekindle memories of the Bogart/ Bacall team in To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep, utilizing Bacall look-alike Lizabeth Scott for that purpose. Totally forgotten was the fact that there was a genuine sexual chemistry between Bogart and Bacall; Scott, alluring though she is, seems merely to be going through the motions. As he is in most of his Columbia films, Humphrey Bogart is so hard-boiled in Dead Reckoning that at times the viewer wants to shake him by the shoulders and say "lighten up!"
